Fringe Benefits

Like any job, truck driving has its positives and negatives. There's been a lot of negatives lately where I work that I won't get into here, but one of the positives is that I'm outside instead of cooped up in an office. I get to see what's going on out in the world, and visit interesting mountain sites like the Mountain Junction General Store. It's on Old Mud Creek Road in Scaly Mountain, NC, right on the Georgia - North Carolina state line. I had to meet a customer there to deliver some solar panels. The road to his house was too small and steep for my truck, so we agreed to meet at the store.

I arrived first, so I went inside to "use the facilities" (truckers learn it's wise to never pass up a clean rest room), and to get a Mountain Dew and a Moon Pie. Proper nutrition is essential when you're on the go. The store had quite a collection of old signs like the ones pictured here, so I got the A2000 out of the truck and made a few photos while I was waiting for my customer. In the photo above, you can see the reflection of my truck in the bottom left corner of the window. (Click on photos to enlarge.)

I guess it's the Walker Evans influence in me - I find it hard to pass up an old sign. So even on bad days, I still get the fringe benefit of visiting some interesting places to make a few photos.

I LOVE your old signs shots! They inspire me to go out and look for some. I found a pretty neat No Trespassing sign that I may post at some point...not anywhere near as good as yours though.

Love old signs like these but I'm particularly fond of the old ones painted on brick walls.

Laughing at your "proper nutrition is essential" comment.

So happy to hear you eat healthy while on the job....
Great old signs. I think I would be taking those all the time if I saw them too.

RC and a moon pie is a southern classic combination. Especially when you can get your hands on the true, tripple-decker moon pies.

Though I understand the Mountain Dew choice for a workin' man.

(Do they still even make RC Cola anymore? I loved them growing up. They were like a coke with twice the sugar.)

I love, love the old signs.

They still make RC Cola, and I like 'em, but they contain no caffeine. I need the caffeine, man!
