The various members of the rhododendron family come in a variety of colors, but the flame azalea is my favorite. The vibrant orange blossoms are a real eye-catcher during spring time in the Smoky Mountains.
At the elevation where I live, the flame azalea show has been over for a few weeks now. However, while taking a Sunday afternoon drive along the higher elevations of the Blue Ridge Parkway, my wife and I found many flame azaleas still in bloom. It was like being able to get an encore performance from one of my favorite wild flowers. (Click on photos to enlarge.)

That second one makes me want to sit down on a bench and just absorb it's beauty.
Delightful. I am amazed by the very long stamens you captured in the first shot. Beautiful color. I would love to see them growing in the wild like that.
Incidentially, if you ever do come this way I just want you to know that our door is always open and we would love to meet you and have a nice visit. Bodie is about a 4 hour drive from our home, do-able...with lots to see between here and there too.
We have been interested in flame azaleas to add to our little house in the mountains. So I googled that topic and came across you blog. As luck would have it, our place is in Haywood County also. We understand the draw of such a place and are thankful that you have captured it so beautifully in your photos. We are at 4400 feet. Have you seen any at that altitude? I hope to look at more of your photos soon, but no time today...
It's possible that I've seen some on the Blue Ridge Parkway at that altitude. Thanks for stopping by!
