The Baptism

Our church had an old-fashioned baptism in the Pigeon River yesterday afternoon. This is the way mountain churches did it before the days of indoor, fiberglass baptistries and heated water. We gathered on the river bank, sang a couple of hymns, and then into that cold, river water the new convert went.

I decided to maintain the old-fashioned flavor of the event by going with a sepia tone and soft focus. Can I get an "Amen"? (Click on individual photos to enlarge.)

Great shots! The sepia tone was a perfect choice. This isn't something you see very often. (In my church we just put some water on their forehead!) That water must have been cold!
P.S. I love your photo from yesterday too!

You can get one from me...AMEN BROTHER...that is great John and I love the tones.

Our daughter was baptized just a couple of years ago and her Daddy did it. We were at a swimming pool. It was very special to watch my husband take our daughter under and bring her out a believer...pretty amazing.

Amen, indeed.

Wow. Fantastic. Our pastor usually gets me to photograph baptisms and it never fails to humble me just how people are willing to hold themselves up to possible ridicule by doing this. I never thought about that when I was baptised as a pre teen, but it sure touches me deeply still to see folks baptised.

Amen! Great images John! Believe it or not I was baptised in the river also. I think that was the coolest thing that ever happened!

Our church still does river baptisms although we do have an indoor one also.

Great shots.

Been years since I had seen a good old fashion batize down in the river anywhere.

My great-great-grandparents were married beside this river in 1850. I live in Honolulu and have never seen it. Thank you for posting these photos.
